France's forestry and timber industry is facing a major trade deficit. This is a real paradox for a country with the fourth largest forest area in Europe, covering almost 32% of its territory.
This discrepancy can be explained mainly by the specific characteristics and structure of our forestry resources. On the one hand, the French forest is extremely fragmented: around 3.3 million owners share 75% of the total area. This fragmentation complicates forestry operations and leads to uneven silvicultural management. In addition, the diversity of species available and current management methods generate a high proportion of wood of secondary quality. These resources, which are often heterogeneous and structurally more complex to process, are proving difficult to transform into conventional timber.
Working with a number of partners, the LABOMAP Wood Materials and Machining team is innovating to make the most of these local secondary-quality resources and turn them into sustainable, high-performance materials for the construction industry.
