This book is based on the lecture given in Le Creusot on 25 November 2025, as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Académie François Bourdon.
It will be on sale for €16 from 10 September and on the day of the book signing at the Pavillon de l’Industrie.

The authors:
- Dominique Schneider: a trained psychoanalyst, writer and daughter of Charles Schneider, the last ironmaster of Le Creusot.
- Jean-Philippe Passaqui: senior lecturer at the Autun Military College, and research associate at the Institute of Modern and Contemporary History (UMR8066).

The year 1837 was marked by the creation of an integrated enterprise, known as Schneider frères et Cie, which marked the beginning of an epic story that would unfold across Burgundy, France and indeed the world.
For four generations, the Schneider family would shape the course of the mining, metallurgical and mechanical engineering industries, whilst transforming their iconic site in Le Creusot into a technical, organisational and social laboratory.
The founders of the dynasty, Adolphe and Eugène Schneider, provided the decisive impetus for a factory that had faced one setback after another since its inception. Drawing on their respective expertise, Henri, Eugène II and Charles Schneider each, in turn, left a profound and distinctive mark on the company’s history.
